Ana felt herself weakening under his mouth, as she always did. It was too late now, anyway. She was done for, and she knew it. The wild, crazed fever that had gripped her, that had somehow woven through Mason as well, was undeniable.

They'd experienced a mating frenzy, unlike any they'd ever shared before. A mating frenzy. She'd never had one before, of course, but she knew perfectly well what it was. The sexual frenzy that claimed two mates together, that bound them to one another. A mating frenzy, with a human. Impossible, but it had happened.

Inside, her wolf gave a satisfied smile that showed her canines, despite being flopped on her back in delighted relaxation after Ana finally did what she was supposed to and claimed her mate.

Even though Mason could never truly know. Even though she had absolutely no idea how to make this work, how to keep him with her and not ever tell him the truth. He wasn't a shifter, despite responding to her on some deeply primal level, and he could never know the truth.

And how was she supposed to tell the pack? They would not accept him as her mate. Mason wasn't a wolf.

Not not wolf, he wolf again insisted.

I don't understand, Ana thought, staring at the features of the man she loved. Damned if she did, but more damned if she didn't. And I don't want to right now. She couldn't live without his touch again. It would kill her to try. Her own wolf might kill her if she tried. There had to be a midway, even if it was temporary. Even if it was only for one night. Okay, and maybe for another day. And a week. Maybe even a whole month.

She made up her mind in half a heartbeat. “Mason. I don't know what will happen. I can't tell you everything yet.”

A grin lazed over his face. “Don't tell me you secretly work for the Mob. Because my grandfather and your boss have known each other forever, and I'd know about it.”

A giggle snorted out of her, even as she filed away the odd truth that Alpha and Mason's human family did seem to know one another quite well. Shrugging it aside for now, she let herself relax against his solid maleness.

“No. No Mob ties as far as I know. Just...” She paused.

“Go on, babe,” he gently encouraged her. “Just what?”

“Just...I love you. Can that be enough for tonight?” Her wolf danced ecstatically in her head, accepting it as enough for now. “I can't fight it,” she admitted in a whisper.

Mason tipped her chin up. His lips hovering over hers, he said, “For the night before Christmas, Ana, you can have anything you want. I'm just damned happy it's me you want. Now shut up and kiss me, babe,” he said, voice a playful yet almost serious growl again. “I've been missing your lips for too long now.”

With that, Mason kissed her under the mistletoe tacked to the mantel above her wood stove.
